Inflation: June Energy Decline Pulls the Monthly Index Lower

The Consumer Price Index fell 0.4% in June after seasonal adjustment and rose 3.5% over the previous 12 months. Excluding food and energy, prices were unchanged for the month and increased 2.6% year over year. The monthly decline was driven primarily by energy, so the headline and core measures tell different parts of the inflation story.

Employment: Hiring Slows While Unemployment Holds at 4.2%

U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 57,000 in June, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.2%. Average hourly earnings were 3.5% higher than a year earlier. Together, the figures point to slower hiring alongside continued wage growth.

Real gross domestic product increased at a 1.5% annual rate in the second quarter, down from 2.1% in the first quarter. The economy is still expanding, but more slowly than at the start of the year. Advance estimates are routinely revised.
