Inflation: June Energy Decline Pulls the Monthly Index Lower

The Consumer Price Index fell 0.4% in June after seasonal adjustment and rose 3.5% over the previous 12 months. Excluding food and energy, prices were unchanged for the month and increased 2.6% year over year. The monthly decline was driven primarily by energy, so the headline and core measures tell different parts of the inflation story.

Employment: Hiring Slows While Unemployment Holds at 4.2%

U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by 57,000 in June, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.2%. Average hourly earnings were 3.5% higher than a year earlier. Together, the figures point to slower hiring alongside continued wage growth.

Growth: First-Quarter Real GDP Revised to 2.1%

Real gross domestic product increased at a 2.1% annual rate in the first quarter, up from 0.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025. Real final sales to private domestic purchasers rose 1.7%. The advance estimate for the second quarter is scheduled for July 30.

Federal Reserve: Policy Rate Held at 3.50%–3.75%

The Federal Open Market Committee kept the federal funds target range at 3.50%–3.75%. Its statement described economic activity as expanding at a solid pace while inflation remained above the Committee's 2% goal. The next scheduled meeting is July 28–29.
